Leopard tortoise

Stigmochelys pardalis

In the southern parts of its expansive area of distribution, the leopard tortoise passes the coldest period in hibernation. During this time, the temperature can fall to below 0°C. In the rainy spring season, the leopard tortoise may be washed away with the floodwaters. Fortunately, even though it is unable to swim, it can float on the water. During the dry season, the leopard tortoise remains as passive as possible. After the rainy season, the vegetation is lush once more, providing this tortoise with plenty to eat. To obtain the minerals it needs, the leopard tortoise sometimes eats hyena droppings.
