Korkeasaari Zoo's mission is to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and endangered species. Korkeasaari Zoo is home to over 150 species from all over the world and we partake in conservation work globally.

Animal welfare

Animal welfare is the ethical foundation of everything Korkeasaari Zoo does.

The animals are cared for by professionals, and both the care and the enclosures are designed to suit each species and individual. Studies constantly bring in new information concerning the needs that are crucial for the well-being of animals. This information is then utilised in the development of the activities.

Zoo populations

An international network of zoos working to conserve species.

Korkeasaari Zoo breeds and raises animals in collaboration with other conservation-oriented zoos to ensure the survival of species and make reintroduction programs possible. The conservation of species requires populations consisting of hundreds of individuals, which is why participating zoos form an international network.

Species reintroduction

Korkeasaari Zoo has helped to strengthen the wild populations of several species.

Restoring species that have already disappeared from the wild to their original habitats or strengthening endangered animal populations is a long-term effort, in which zoos are involved in cooperation with other conservation organisations.

Research work

The research conducted at Korkeasaari Zoo aims to improve the success of conservation efforts and animal welfare.

Various studies and monitoring projects are continuously underway – always on the animals’ terms, of course. Collaboration is carried out with, among others, universities, and the research findings can also be used by other zoos and conservation organizations.
