Wolverine

Gulo gulo

The wolverine is one of the largest species of weasel. Its scientific name is derived from the word “glutton” due to its apparently voracious feeding style. In reality, wolverines do not live up to this negative reputation, but they are known to store food for later consumption. The wolverine’s broad paws are like snowshoes, allowing it to easily move through deep snow.

The wolverine’s mating season is in midsummer. Due to delayed fetal development, the female gives birth to 1–3 white-coated kits in February in a burrow dug in the snow. The kits get their brown coat at the age of two months. They spend their first summer following their mother. Otherwise the wolverine is a solitary animal.
