Tufted duck
Aythya fuligula
The tufted duck is comfortable living in many types of waterways. Outside the nesting period, tufted ducks can form very large flocks. The adult male has a stylish black and white colour pattern with a distinctive long tuft hanging from the back of its head. The female is dark brown. The tufted duck feeds by diving for aquatic invertebrates and plants.
The ducks living in Korkeasaari Zoo are former patients of the Wildlife Hospital. They did not recover sufficiently during treatment to return to the wild, so a special permit was obtained from the authorities for them to live in the zoo.
