Pine marten

Martes martes

The pine marten is a skilled climber and jumper that can jump from one branch to another over a distance of up to three metres. Nevertheless, the pine marten mostly moves on the ground. Some pine martens lead a migratory life, while others have a daytime nest as a base and move around the surrounding area at night.

The pine marten stores food for later consumption, which is typical of mustelids. It searches for food very systematically, going through all possible hiding places. The pine marten’s fur was once a highly valued commodity, but its significance in this regard has since declined.
