Mindanao bleeding-heart

Gallicolumba crinigera

The Mindanao bleeding-heart has got its name from the blood-red spot on its chest that reminds a bleeding wound. The birds prefer to stay on the ground most of the time. Destruction of its habitat due to tree felling and mining is threatening the Mindanao bleeding-heart.

This species and the individuals living in Korkeasaari Zoo are part of an ex-situ conservation programme by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria EAZA, known as the EEP.
