Goitered gazelle

Gazella s. subgutturosa

The goitered gazelle is a small weather-resistant antelope found in Asia. Unlike other gazelles, only the male goitered gazelle has horns. The male goitered gazelle can be distinguished from other gazelle species by the shape of its horns.

Gazelle males and females spend a large part of the year in separate herds. They only come together in the autumn and winter.

Conservation

The goitered gazelle is threatened by desertification and the loss of habitat to humans and agriculture.

The species and the individuals living in Korkeasaari Zoo are part of an ex-situ conservation programme by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria EAZA, known as the EEP.
