Flat dragon lizard
Smaug depressus
The flat dragon lizard’s skin is a scaly, spinous armour that protects the lizard from enemy attacks. Despite its protective armour, the lizard thrives in rocky crevices. The species is native to the Soutpansberg mountains in South Africa and is one of the largest species among girdled lizards. The scientific name of the Smaug genus is derived from the dragon in Tolkien’s books.
The species is part of the CITES convention, which regulates the international trade of endangered or threatened animals and plants.
