Emperor tamarin
Saguinus imperator
Emperor tamarins move about in family groups. They spend up to a third of their time looking for food and hunting. The species received its name for its moustache-like facial hair, reminiscent of the moustache style of German and Austrian emperors in the early 20th century. The father tamarin helps the mother give birth, cleans the newborn, and carries the young around, while the mother is responsible only for nursing the young.
Conservation
This species and the individuals living in Korkeasaari Zoo are part of an ex-situ conservation programme by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria EAZA, known as the EEP. The aim of the EEP is to maintain a healthy zoo population of the species.
