Dwarf mongoose

A mongoose group has separate warning sounds for different predators. The individual on watch duty will patrol on top of a termite mound, while the others go about their business nearby. On hearing the warning signal, the mongooses scurry off quickly in their burrows or start an attack, depending on the threat.

A mongoose pack has only one couple, the alpha pair, that will mate. Most helpers, or other pack members, are descendants or siblings of the alpha pair. The helpers are spared the costs of mating, but their bloodline will carry on in their relatives. So, the helpers participate in nursing the young and have the added benefit of enjoying a safe life within a pack. The alpha pair, on the other hand, gets support in nursing their young, as well as several extra pairs of eyes guarding them.
