Chinese pond turtle
Mauremys reevesii
The Chinese pond turtle often sunbathes on rocks by the water or on tree trunks. The female is almost twice as large as the male.
Conservation
The endangered Chinese pond turtles are harvested for food and for use in traditional Chinese medicine. For this reason they are also farmed in China. Other threats to the species are water pollution and its growing popularity as a pet.
The species is part of the CITES convention, which regulates the international trade of endangered or threatened animals and plants.
