Bank vole
Myodes glareolus
The bank vole is distinguished from the short-tailed vole, another common vole species, by its red-brown fur and longer tail. The bank vole is the most common rodent in Finland, but the size of its population varies every year: the peak year is usually followed by a rapid decline and gradual growth in the population size.
Bank voles reproduce fast: they reach maturity at the age of 1–2 months and give birth to several litters every year. If the winter is mild, the vole can reproduce even in the winter. The bank vole climbs well, for example, into low branches of trees. In the winter, bank voles dig tunnels in the snow.
