Reed vole
Alexandromys fortis
The reed vole, which is quite large for a vole, lives in eastern Asia, thrives along watercourses in dense vegetation. It is agile in the water and is an expert swimmer. It feeds on a daily amount of plants equal to its weight. Reed voles also like insects and they collect food caches to their underground tunnels for the winter.
The species is very social and lives in family groups. During the breeding season, which runs from summer to late autumn, a female may have up to six litters. The young mature at around four months of age.
