Red wallaby

Notamacropus rufogriseus

The red wallaby is one of approximately 50 species of kangaroo. It is a common species in its area of distribution, although many of its relative species are endangered. The red wallaby is a hardy species that can live outdoors in the Finnish climate long into the autumn. Kangaroos live in groups of a few dozen individuals.

The adult males are significantly larger than the females. Only the female kangaroo has a pouch. The joey is born after one month of gestation and then crawls into the mother’s pouch. In the pouch, the joey feeds on the mother’s milk and grows for a period of nine months, after which the mother will continue to nurse and care for the joey for a few more months.
