Korkeasaari Zoo has received a Helsinki Travel Award, presented by the Helsinki Tourism Foundation. The award is given to organisations and initiatives that bring the city to life, giving tourists a reason to visit Helsinki and Helsinki residents a reason to get out and about.

Korkeasaari Zoo has a long history as part of Helsinki. Even now, 137 years after the zoo was founded, it remains a significant part of the city’s appeal for both residents and tourists alike.

Korkeasaari Zoo regularly assesses its impact on Helsinki and the lives of its residents. Feedback indicates a strong belief in Korkeasaari Zoo’s significance:

  • 90 per cent of respondents believe that Korkeasaari Zoo enhances Helsinki’s appeal
  • 80 per cent of respondents from Helsinki feel that Korkeasaari Zoo boosts the city’s vitality
  • 75 per cent of respondents from Helsinki believe that Korkeasaari Zoo improves the quality of life and well-being of residents

Korkeasaari Zoo also acts as one of the driving forces behind tourism in Helsinki. Over 60 per cent of respondents from outside Helsinki state that a visit to Korkeasaari Zoo is their primary reason for coming to Helsinki. During the same trip, they often report visiting the city’s restaurants and other attractions, as well as making use of accommodation and shopping facilities, thereby generating tourism revenue and jobs in Helsinki beyond Korkeasaari Zoo itself.

We are living in a time when biodiversity is declining worldwide, and that is why the species conservation work carried out by Korkeasaari Zoo is more relevant and important than ever. Korkeasaari Zoo is being developed as a tourist destination with the support of visitors, partners in the tourism sector and the city of Helsinki, whilst at the same time working to promote biodiversity.
