Eastern Hermann’s tortoise
Testudo hermanni boettgeri
The Eastern Hermann’s tortoise is the most widespread of all subspecies of Hermann’s tortoises. It bears great resemblance to another tortoise of the Mediterranean region, the African spurred tortoise. Wildfires and traffic threaten this species of tortoise, which used to be captured for use as food and pets in the past.
The tortoise living at Korkeasaari Zoo is a former pet that has been donated to the zoo.
