Amur leopard cat
Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus
The Amur leopard cat is a northern subspecies of the leopard cat, which is a widely spread species in Asia. It is very adaptable to its surroundings and it can also survive near human habitation.
The Amur leopard cat can withstand cold temperatures with ease but it does not like to wade in deep snow. It is a skilled climber and swimmer. When it gets frightened, a leopard cat does not climb a tree like a regular house cat would, but instead it seeks shelter in a bush or behind a fallen tree.
Conservation
In many places the species is still quite common, but the population on Japan’s Tsushima island has grown worryingly small. The species is threatened because the cats are hunted for their fur.
